Man Utd player ratings vs Athletic Club: 9/10 duo move Red Devils to brink of Europa final | Football | Sport

Manchester United produced one of their best performances of the season to put one foot in the Europa League final. The Red Devils will take a commanding 3-0 lead back to Old Trafford after thrashing Athletic Club on their own territory, with a goal from Casemiro and two more from Bruno Fernandes.

The Bilbao hosts were always going to find it tough after going down to 10 men in the 35th minute, when Dani Vivian was penalised for pulling Rasmus Hojlund down in the box. It was a tricky night for referee Espen Eskas inside a rowdy San Mames. And although the home side felt hard done by, there is no doubt that United were by far the better team. Here, Express Sport takes you through how each United player performed on the night...

Man Utd player ratings vs Athletic Club (3-4-3)

Andre Onana: 7

Sprung to his right to deny Alex Berenguer early on, didn't have a lot to do otherwise.

Victor Lindelof: 6

Surrendered possession which led to a dangerous Athletic Club attack. Made up for it with a terrific goal-line block.

Harry Maguire: 8 (De Ligt, 65)

Solid in his defensive work and popped up with an unlikely bit of skill on the right wing, where he found a yard and put in a cross which was flicked on by Manuel Ugarte and headed home by Casemiro.

Leny Yoro: 7 (booked)

Lost Inaki Williams, who should have scored with a header in the first half. But his passing out from the back under pressure was excellent.

Noussair Mazraoui: 8 (Shaw, 74)

His low cross into Hojlund led to the penalty that put United two up, and the red card which saw them run away with the game. Unleashed a thunderous strike off the crossbar which would have made it 4-0.

Casemiro: 9

This was the Real Madrid version of Casemiro. Headed United in front and came up with important interceptions. A calm presence in midfield and hardly put a foot wrong all game.

Manuel Ugarte: 7 (Mount, 65)

Wayward early in the match, when he gave the ball away three times in dangerous areas, but effective once he found his passing range. Assisted the first two goals with a flick-on for Casemiro and deft ball through for Fernandes.

Patrick Dorgu: 6 (Amad, 84)

Regularly flew forward on the left, which left United exposed early in the game - not that it mattered as the contest wore on.

Alejandro Garnacho: 8 (booked) (Mainoo, 84)

Dangerous throughout and won countless fouls. Took a goal well in the fourth minute but he was denied by the offside flag.

Rasmus Hojlund: 7

Didn't pose much of a goal threat himself but won the penalty which got Dani Vivian sent off and was generally sharp with his hold-up play.

Bruno Fernandes: 9

Set the tone with a brilliant through-ball to Garnacho which came to nothing. Scored a penalty, and then produced a tidy run and finish to put United three ahead. Another leader's performance from a player who is so reliable indeed on nights like this.

SUBS

Mason Mount: 6 (booked)

He would like to have made more impact on the game.

Matthijs de Ligt: 7

Asserted himself with a strong tackle on Maroan shortly after coming on.

Luke Shaw: N/A

A late addition.

Kobbie Mainoo: N/A

A late addition.

Amad Diallo: N/A

A late addition.
