With temperatures rising, and spring finally upon us, thousands of homes are likely getting into their spring cleaning and switching out heavy woolen jumpers for light layers. But once knitwear goes to the back of the cupboard, what’s keeping them safe from becoming holey and moth-bitten?

Moths are just as eager in warmer weather. Their activity spikes in April and May, and before you know it, you could be dealing with holes in your favourite knits. Chris Hutton, storage expert at Adams SelfStore, has a brilliantly simple and highly effective solution that’s super cost effective - and will actually leave your clothing in better shape than you started with.

Chris said: “Moth larvae don’t hibernate; they hatch as soon as the conditions are right. With spring’s early warmth, your cupboards, drawers, and even those forgotten spots under the sofa become prime breeding grounds for moths.”

Chris’s solution is not only cheap - it smells great too.

He said:“While we might find lavender’s scent calming and pleasant, moths find it repellent. All you need to do is place a sachet where moths are likely to hide, wardrobes, drawers, or anywhere they can make a home. Once they catch a whiff of the lavender, they’ll make themselves scarce. Simple as that.”

Lavender sachets can be purchased online for around £2.90 a pop but if you want to make your own, it’s £2 for a 50g bag of lavender available online. You only need 10g per pouch, which works out to just 40p per sachet

Chris said: “Moths might be small, but they can cause big problems. A few pence invested in lavender sachets could save you a lot of time and money in the long run.”
