Liverpool win the Premier League as Reds match Man Utd on 20 titles | Football | Sport

Liverpool have been crowned the 2024-25 Premier League champions after their 5-1 win against Tottenham at Anfield. Thanks to Crystal Palace's 2-2 draw at second-placed Arsenal on Wednesday night, the Reds needed just a point against Spurs to mathematically confirm their 20th English top-flight title. And they got a full three points thanks to goals from Luis Diaz, Alexis Mac Allister, Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah and a Destiny Udogie own goal after Dominic Solanke had put Spurs in front.

The Reds have won it with four games to spare after building a commanding lead over Arsenal. They are back on the perch following a frenetic and breathless campaign, in which new boss Arne Slot has defied the odds and surged to the summit at the first time of asking, despite securing only one new recruit at the start of the campaign. Slot has used the framework left behind by Jurgen Klopp to drive Liverpool to become the kings of England once more, having lost just twice all season to date.

Liverpool will have the most coveted prize of all back in their trophy cabinet and will get an eagerly-awaited title parade next month. They were cruelly denied one when they won the league in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

It was a two-horse title race between Liverpool and Arsenal which in parts looked to be a thrilling affair that would go down to the wire. But ultimately it ended up in Slot's men winning the league at a canter and asserting their superiority.

Liverpool have tied up the title with five games remaining - a feat that which places them among the most dominant champions in Premier League history. Slot’s inaugural season at Anfield has been nothing short of extraordinary, after starting with a hard-fought 2-0 win over newly-promoted Ipswich on the opening day.

Taking over from Klopp, Slot has seamlessly integrated his tactical philosophy, leading Liverpool to the top of the table with a blend of attacking flair and defensive solidity.

The Dutchman has been credited on numerous occasions for making the Reds a more patient and balanced side, as opposed to the previous regime of all-out attack and famed 'heavy metal' football.

Liverpool have picked up some extraordinary wins along the way, few more sweeter than a Premier League home-and-away double over arch rivals Manchester City - a 2-0 victory at the Etihad Stadium effectively ending Pep Guardiola's hopes of retaining the league title.

Liverpool and City have shared the spoils in recent years, in what has been one of the most tantalising rivalries of the modern era.

But as City faltered this season, it was widely expected that the newly resurgent side on the block, Arsenal, would go one better than the previous campaign and finally end their wait to be annointed the country's finest.

But whereas Liverpool remained consistent and continued grinding out one victory after another, the Gunners came unstuck by a combination of a lack of firepower and a cruel run of injuries.

Long-term absences of the likes of Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard and Gabriel Jesus stunted the campaign of Arteta's men at various junctures, and the failure to sign a bonafide striker resulted in a lack of final product.

Meanwhile, on the red half of Merseyside, the ever-reliant Mohamed Salah has posted one of his finest seasons to date.

The Egyptian maestro, who has recently been rewarded with a lucrative two-year contract extension, is on course to finish the season as his most prolific - despite now being 32 years old.

At present Salah has 27 goals and 18 assists to his name in the league, breaking yet more records and emerging as the frontrunner for the PFA Player of the Season gong.

Slot likewise is tipped to scoop the Manager of the Season award, after succeeding Klopp in the most perfect manner possible.
