Football is the most popular sport in the world, so it’s no surprise that many stadiums are considered works of art. From the modern Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to the spectacular new Santiago Bernabéu, some venues are as impressive as the action they host.

One of the most beautiful stadiums, however, isn’t in Europe or South America - it’s in Africa. And with a glowing, fire-like design and nearly 95,000 seats, it’s as unique as they come. The FNB Stadium, also known as Soccer City, is located in Johannesburg, South Africa. With a capacity of 94,736, it is the largest football stadium in Africa, according to Business Insider Africa.

Originally opened in 1989, the venue underwent a big transformation ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, which saw it host the final between Spain and the Netherlands.

It also hosted the tournament’s closing ceremony and saw the final public appearance of Nelson Mandela.

Over the years, it has been the site of many historic events, including Mandela’s first speech in Johannesburg after his release from prison in 1990, and his memorial service in 2013.

But it’s the stadium’s design that makes it stand out. Architecture firm Populous, which led the redesign for the World Cup, created a structure inspired by a traditional African calabash pot.

The outside is clad in mosaic panels of earthy reds and browns, and a ring of lights around the base gives the appearance of fire beneath the bowl-shaped building.

“When you lay your eyes on its facade, you’re getting a glimpse into a vibrant heritage,” Populous said. “The earthy colours wrap around its exterior, projecting a sense of unity and harmony.”

Inside, the stadium was built with fan experience in mind. No seat is more than 100 metres from the pitch, and there are no restricted views, ensuring a clear sightline from every angle.

The roof structure helps trap noise to create a more intense atmosphere, while upgraded VIP areas, changing rooms, media zones, and concourses brought the venue up to FIFA standards.

The FNB Stadium is now home to Kaizer Chiefs FC and regularly hosts matches, concerts, and large public events.
