One common issue orchid owners face is the buds falling off just before they get a chance to bloom, a frustrating problem known as bud blast. But according to flower experts at Interflora, one simple task can make a big difference: misting your orchid.

Misting boosts humidity around the plant, keeping the buds from drying out and falling off prematurely. Orchids are tropical plants, and they thrive in warm, humid conditions – something many UK homes struggle to provide. "Mist the leaves lightly to increase humidity," Interflora advises, especially during dry spells or in centrally heated rooms.

Make sure to use room-temperature water and mist in the morning so the moisture has time to evaporate.

But you must avoid misting the flowers directly; only focus on the leaves and aerial roots.

You can also improve humidity by investing in humidity trays and grouping plants together.

Orchids prefer bright, indirect light, so position them near a window but away from harsh midday sun.

And avoid draughty spots or placing them near radiators, which can dry the air and shock the plant.

When to water an orchid

Water only when the top inch of the compost is dry, and ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.

Feeding once a month with a specialist orchid fertiliser during growing season (which is now) supports flowering. But overwatering or overfeeding can do more harm than good, so go easy.

If your orchid was recently moved or repotted, give it time to adjust before expecting new blooms. Look out for other signs of stress like yellowing leaves or wrinkling, which may indicate incorrect care.
