Brits with gardens getting barely any sun urged to get these 5 gorgeous plants

If you've got a garden that barely sees the sun, don’t give up on your greenery dreams just yet. According to horticultural experts, there’s a surprising number of stunning climbing plants that thrive in the shade. Even the shadiest outdoor spaces can become lush, colourful retreats.

Climbing plants are ideal for transforming bare fences, brick walls, or balconies with their flowing stems and vibrant foliage. And the best part is that some of the most striking varieties don’t need direct sunlight at all. According to the experts at House Beautiful, these five climbers are perfect for low-light gardens.

1. Hydrangea petiolaris

This graceful climber bursts into bloom in late July and August with creamy white flowers.

It’s well-suited for taller walls, growing up to six metres high. Minimal upkeep is required, with only the occasional pruning to remove dead stems.

2. Trachelospermum jasminoides

Also known as star jasmine, this evergreen climber retains its vibrant green foliage all year round. While it prefers some sunlight, it can happily grow in partial shade with well-drained soil.

It works beautifully in a large container and only needs light trimming to keep its shape.

3. Clematis montana var. wilsonii

Known for its variety of flower shapes and sweet scent, this clematis thrives in shady, moist, well-drained soil.

It’s also remarkably low maintenance, there’s no need for pruning, making it ideal for less experienced gardeners.

4. Honeysuckle

Famous for its trumpet-shaped blossoms and heady fragrance, honeysuckle is another shade-loving superstar.

It attracts butterflies and other pollinators, and its red berries provide food for birds, adding life and movement to even the quietest gardens.

5. Ivy

The classic climber, ivy often gets a bad rap for being too aggressive. But with a little care and regular trimming, it can bring a rustic, storybook charm to shaded spaces.

Best of all, ivy actually prefers full shade and cool conditions, making it perfect for sun-starved spots.
