The United States wrested the gold medal back from Canada at the women's hockey world championship with a 4-3 overtime win in Sunday's final in Ceske Budejovice, Czech Republic.

Tessa Janecke scored the overtime winner as the U.S. claimed its second world title in three years after beating host Canada in the 2023 final in Brampton, Ont.

The Americans earned an 11th gold medal behind Canada with 13.

United States take down Canada in overtime to win women's hockey worlds gold

Tessa Janecke was the benefactor of a bad turnover by the Canadians, as she buried a pass from Taylor Heise to clinch a 4-3 overtime victory against Canada. This gave the United States the win over their rivals for a third-consecutive women's world championships tournament.

It was the 10th final between Canada and the U.S. to go to overtime or a shootout.

The rivalry for women's hockey supremacy continues into next year's Olympic Games in Milan and Cortina, Italy, where Canada will attempt to defend the gold medal there.

U.S. captain Hilary Knight extended her record for the most world championship gold medals won by a player with 10.
