Scottie Scheffler blasted for 'classless' gesture when putting green jacket on McIlroy | Golf | Sport

Scottie Scheffler has come under fire for his actions after Rory McIlroy’s victory at the Masters, with only the chairman of the Augusta National Golf Club, Fred Ridley, appearing to congratulate the new champion. The Northern Irishman completed a career grand slam at Augusta, managing to get the better of Justin Rose in a dramatic sudden-death playoff.

McIlroy went into the final day of the competition with a two-shot lead but threw that away on the first hole. The 35-year-old quickly recomposed himself and surged into a five-shot lead with eight holes to play, but he failed to hold his nerve and ultimately finished tied on 11 under par with Rose.

With the game heading to playoffs, McIlroy managed to recompose himself and went on to produce a sensational birdie on the 19th to land the spoils, having watched Rose settle for a par just moments before.

McIlroy could not hide his emotions after recognising his success, dropping to his knees and crying on the green. He was then seen beaming with pride when finally getting his hands on a green jacket, with last year’s winner Scheffler passing it on.

However, there did appear to be a minor hiccup in the indoor ceremony, which fans were quick to pick up on. After Ridley asked Scheffler to present McIlroy with his green jacket, the world No. 1 placed the jacket around the world No. 2, who replied: “Thanks, Scottie.”

Ridley then congratulated the 35-year-old and extended his hand for a handshake. However, by that point, Scheffler was spotted moving backwards and then walking out of shot, and therefore he was not available to shake the hand of his rival.

Fans were quick to point out how quickly Scheffler had fled from the scene, with one writing on X: “What’s the story with Scottie? Not even a 'well done' and just melted away. Very awkward." Others added: “Very poor from Scheffler,” and “Scheffler classless, never opened his mouth or shake hands put jacket on and legged it.”

The moment was a stark contrast to the on-course presentation, which saw Scheffler and McIlroy hug after the latter received his green jacket. The rivals were also spotted laughing during the early stages of the ceremony as they chatted about how the action panned out.
