Willie Mullins simply cannot stop winning, and it would be no surprise to see him bridge the gap on Dan Skelton in the British Trainers’ Championship when racing concludes at Ayr on Saturday evening. However, he may need a helping hand from Harry Cobden to do so.

The Irish trainer and English jockey both head to Scotland in flying form, and I can see the pair combining with CAPTAIN CODY (12/1) to land the spoils in the Scottish Grand National on Saturday afternoon.

Everything Mullins touches turns to gold at the minute, and you can make a case for each of his six-runner cavalry. Chosen Witness has shortened into favourite since the declarations after he shaped like a stayer on his last two starts and could be well-handicapped. However, Captain Cody may well be the one to side with.

The gelding was jumping well before coming down in the National Hunt Chase after being gradually backed through the morning, and that would suggest that this slightly longer trip is unlikely to cause him any issues. With an excellent judge of pace on his back, Captain Cody could be set for his day in the sun.

With six runners, it would be no surprise to see Mullins have the 1-2-3 again. However, I think MAGNA SAM (20/1) could outrun his big odds and give the market principles plenty to think about. The 11-year-old underwent wind surgery in October and that appears to have worked a charm, winning the Edinburgh National last month and finishing well clear of the reopposing Surrey Quest. Carrying just 10st 2, Magna Sam certainly has the potential to improve upon his fifth-place finish two years ago.

Another with course form is KLARC KENT (20/1), who finished third last year and could build on that performance here. He was beaten by Macdermott and Surrey Quest that day but arrives today on far better terms, and he has been dropped even further in the weights despite a fair effort in the National Hunt Chase.

SURREY QUEST (10/1) went down by the narrowest of margins when being beaten in last year’s Scottish Grand National and going one better seems to have been the plan ever since. After a third-place finish in the Edinburgh National, where he was hampered during the early stages but stayed on well, Toby Lawes will have the eight-year-old spot on for a renewed effort at Ayr.

In terms of the best of the rest, you can make a case for several. I don’t think Olympic Man’s last few have suggested that four miles will suit him, although doubting Mullins is a fool’s game. The good ground could be an issue for favourite Chosen Witness and the sun simply won’t stop shining in Scotland.

Hasthing fell at the last in the National Hunt Chase and that certainly wasn't his only jumping error on the day, so, at another big price, FLASH DE TOUZAINE (25/1) enters calculations after returning to form at Limerick last month. The 10-year-old is 1lb higher than his third in the race in 2023 and will enjoy this drying ground.
