Tennis official hit with lifetime ban for breaching corruption rules as two more punished | Tennis | Sport![]() A tennis official has received a lifetime ban from the sport, while two others have been suspended. The International Tennis Integrity Agency has confirmed that three national-level officials from the Dominican Republic have been punished in relation to breaches of the anti-corruption programme. Luis Rodriguez, who received the lifetime ban, was also fined £11.5k ($15k). He had denied charges relating to six matches in the Dominican Republic between 2018 and 2020. Independent Anti-Corruption Hearing Officer Richard Young ruled on all three cases. They related to the entering of false data into the match scoring device to facilitate betting between 2018 and 2021. A hearing into Rodriguez’s charges was held in December 2024. Young upheld the charges and issued the lifetime ban and £11.5k fine. The ban came into place on January 21, 2025, the date of the written decision. When making his decision, Young stated: “As a chair umpire, he was in an important position of trust charged with upholding the integrity of the sport. This was not a one-off occurrence of bad judgment.” Two other officials also received fines and suspensions. Antonio Sosa denied charges relating to two matches in the Dominican Republic in 2021. A hearing was also held in December 2024. Again, Young upheld the charges. The Anti-Corruption Hearing Officer handed Sosa a five-year ban backdated to October 3, 2022, when the ITF provisionally suspended Sosa. The period of ineligibility will end on October 2, 2027. Sosa also received a £3.8k ($5k) fine. Wellingthon Lopez denied charges relating to two matches in the Dominican Republic in 2019 and 2020. Young upheld the charges in a hearing which took place in February. Young issued the official with a four-year and six-month suspension, and a £766 ($1k) fine. Wellingthon Lopez’s ban was also backdated to when he was initially provisionally suspended by the ITF in October 2021. The suspension will end on April 26, 2026. While suspended, and during Rodriguez’s lifetime ban, the officials are not allowed to officiate at or attend any tournament sanctioned by the ATP, WTA, ITF, Tennis Australia, the French Tennis Federation, Wimbledon, the USTA, or any national association.
