How to remove limescale from showerheads fast and naturally without vinegar

Limescale can be a real hassle in the bathroom, clinging stubbornly to surfaces and often taking up residence in your shower head. Not only is it unsightly, but it also reduces water flow by blocking exit holes. While many rely on white vinegar for natural descaling, cleaning enthusiast Lianne Wood hit a snag with her particularly severe limescale problem.

After countless tips from other cleaning enthusiasts, Lianne Wood discovered that a simple 2p coin could do the job in moments. Over in the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips and Tricks Facebook group, Lianne excitedly posted: “So, I’ve lived in my house for a long time now! The shower head on our taps does not work properly. Because of the thick limescale, water doesn’t spray properly.”

She continued: “I’ve tried cleaning it over the years, but gave up. I tried using vinegar, but it wouldn’t remove the shower head limescale completely. That is, until tonight, thanks to seeing the 2p hack. It worked well on the limescale in 15 seconds. It's so much better!”

The Mrs Hinch follower even showcased before-and-after photos of her shower head. In the initial photo, the fitting was overwhelmed with black limescale; following the 2p intervention, it appeared spotless.

So what makes the 2p coin so effective against limescale? It’s believed that the copper in the coin reacts chemically with limescale, causing it to dissolve.

Shelley Law, another member of the page, echoed Lianne’s success story, sharing her impressive results using a 2p coin on both her shower head and taps.

She shared: “For many years, I've tried different lotions and potions to solve the limescale problem on these taps and shower heads.

“I joined this group and saw a few mentions of a 2p coin, I was sceptical, I thought ‘well I’ve tried everything else, what have I got to lose'? We have a winner. The limescale is all gone now.”

Members of the group responded to her post with their own experiences. Heather McKee said: “I tried the 2p tip; it’s amazing. I’m descaling everything now.”

Jadejemma added: “Amazing, isn’t it? I was like you and super sceptical, but now I look around for any signs of limescale anywhere just to do some more.”

AJ WB commented: “I was sceptical too, but it really does work! The only problem I have now is that the limescale was basically holding the 20-year-old tap together, and now it’s dripping constantly.”
