Chelsea and Brentford contested a goalless bore draw at the Gtech Community Stadium, with 90 minutes not enough to separate them. Ahead of the UEFA Conference League quarter-finals on Thursday, Enzo Maresca made a host of changes to the side that beat Tottenham three days ago.

Nicolas Jackson made his return from injury off the bench. And he perhaps came on sooner than expected, with Christopher Nkunku hauled off at the interval. The Frenchman felt the wrath of team-mate Enzo Fernandez for failing to drop deep and playing a slow pass during a poor first-half display, and he was comfortably upstaged by Jackson.

Chelsea player ratings vs Brentford (4-2-3-1)

Robert Sanchez: 5

Distribution wasn't great, with one misplaced pass gifting Brentford an early chance. Had a couple of other shaky moments, too, and the Bees targeted him once they caught wind. But a few good saves, including a late one to deny Bryan Mbeumo.

Malo Gusto: 7 (booked)

Started at right-back but spent most of the game in midfield, where he was busy and involved. Set up a good chance for Nkunku, which the Frenchman wasted.

Tosin Adarabioyo: 6 (booked)

Passed it around the back confidently under pressure but put in a bad tackle on Yehor Yarmolyuk and got a booking for his troubles.

Trevoh Chalobah: 5

Had a tough time up against the pace of Kevin Schade.

Reece James: 7 (Cucurella, 77)

Played on the left and had a tasty battle with Mbeumo. Delivered two brilliant long-range free-kicks which could easily have been turned in.

Moises Caicedo: 7

Put tackles in, broke up play, even went on a mazy run or two. Energetic in the middle of the park.

Enzo Fernandez: 6 (booked)

Sprayed some nice passes around as he tried to break the lines, but ultimately could have offered more going forward in a game when Chelsea really needed him to.

Noni Madueke: 5 (Neto, 58)

Offered very little on his first Premier League start for almost two months.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall: 6 (Palmer, 58)

Didn't exactly set the game alight after being given just his second Premier League start for Chelsea. Played a solid through-ball to set Jadon Sancho free in the first half.

Jadon Sancho: 5

Not a particularly good showing on the left. Lost the ball too many times. One or two very small flashes of quality but generally ineffective.

Christopher Nkunku: 4 (Jackson, 45)

Barely contributed anything before being hooked at half-time, and blew a decent chance with a poor first touch after being slid in by Gusto.

Nicolas Jackson: 7

Embraced the physical battle with the Brentford defence in the way Nkunku did not. Put them under pressure, caused them problems and ran in behind. Maresca will be pleased to have him back.

Pedro Neto: 7

Very positive in everything he did, instantly bringing more to the game than Madueke by stinging the fingers of Mark Flekken from outside the box - and again two minutes later. Put a dangerous low ball across the box for Jackson.

Cole Palmer: 6

A fairly lively showing and he almost scored with the last kick of the game.

Marc Cucurella: N/A
