UK's cheapest supermarket for your weekly shop revealed

As the cost of living crisis continues to put pressure on British households, many shoppers are searching for ways to cut down on everyday expenses. With household bills rising again this month, the latest research from consumer group Which? has revealed the UK’s most affordable supermarket for a weekly shop.

For the 15th consecutive month, Aldi has been crowned the cheapest supermarket, with a basket of 79 essential items costing just £133.73. Lidl followed closely behind, with its weekly shop totalling £134.40 for loyalty card holders. Tesco shoppers using a Clubcard would have spent £146.79, while Asda’s equivalent shop came in at £147.09.

On the more expensive end, Morrisons, Ocado, and Waitrose charged significantly more for the same set of essentials, with Waitrose topping the list at a staggering £176.41.

The findings highlight the importance of choosing the right supermarket, as switching retailers could save shoppers hundreds of pounds over the course of a year.

Even among budget supermarkets, Aldi managed to beat Lidl, reinforcing its reputation for providing high-quality products at the lowest prices.

Julie Ashfield, Chief Commercial Officer at Aldi UK, said: “The Which? analysis confirms that the only place shoppers can get Aldi prices, is Aldi."

“With many Brits feeling the pinch this spring, shoppers will be looking for ways to save. We’re proud to be able to offer consistently low prices while maintaining the best quality products.”

As inflation continues to impact grocery costs, retailers are competing fiercely to attract price-conscious consumers.
