Your Windows 11 PC loses iconic feature as Microsoft confirms major change

With Windows 11 now clearly Microsoft's main focus, the US company continues to work on new updates and upgrades that will arrive on devices soon.

The latest release has just been pushed out to the Windows 11 Insider programme for testing, and it includes a new look for when things go wrong.

Yes, the famous Blue Screen Of Death (BSOD) appears to be disappearing for good. As most Windows users will be aware, when an issue happens a sad face appears on a bright blue background with the words "Your PC ran into a problem that it couldn't handle, and now it needs to restart."

This is being changed to green screen for Insiders with the new wording that reads, "Your device ran into a problem and needs to restart."

"We’re previewing a new, more streamlined UI for unexpected restarts which better aligns with Windows 11 design principles and supports our goal of getting users back into productivity as fast as possible," Microsoft explained.

"We’ve simplified your experience while preserving the technical information on the screen. As a reminder, for Windows Insiders this appears as a “green screen”.

When this update is finally unleashed on PCs globally, users are thought to see a black screen (rather than green).

Other changes in this 26120.3653 Beta Channel Build include speech recap in Narrator - which has been designed to help you keep track of what Narrator has spoken and access it for quick reference -, a faster way to launch Copilot and improvements to the Window Share function. Now, when you share links or web content using the Windows share window, you will see a visual preview for that content.

You can see the full list of changes and bug fixes here.

There's no word on when these updates will arrive on PCs but watch this space.
