One item will unblock clogged drains - it's not vinegar or baking soda

Blocked bathroom drains are a common household nuisance, often caused by a buildup of soap scum, grime, and hair. While many turn to the popular baking soda and vinegar method, experts warn that this combination might not always be effective, particularly when dealing with stubborn hair clogs.

According to Justin Cornforth, an experienced plumber and CEO of Ace Plumbing, the best tool for the job is a drain snake, not vinegar or baking soda. “White vinegar and baking soda do nothing with hair and bathroom clogs,” Cornforth previously told Daily Express. Instead, he advised using a high-quality drain snake made from flexible, durable materials like stainless steel.

Unlike cheap plastic drain snakes, which can snap inside the pipe and create a bigger issue, a sturdy metal one effectively removes blockages without causing damage.

If you don’t have a drain snake on hand, Cornforth suggests using a wire coat hanger instead.

Simply straighten the coat hanger, leaving a small hook at one end. Then, carefully insert it into the drain and fish out any trapped hair or debris Once the blockage is removed, pour boiling water down the drain to clear any remaining residue.

If the drain still isn’t fully cleared, Cornforth suggested using hot water combined with vinegar and baking soda may help dislodge any built-up slime. Another option is to use chemical drain cleaners specifically formulated to break down hair and grime.

However, repeated use of these products can become costly over time.

For severe blockages that persist despite multiple DIY attempts, calling a professional plumber may be the most effective solution.

For kitchen sink blockages, Cornforth suggests similar methods, though a drain snake may not always be necessary. Instead, he recommends pouring hot water down the sink and using a mixture of baking soda and vinegar. You can also apply commercial drain unblockers designed for kitchen sinks.

If using boiling water, especially with plastic pipes, make sure you allow it to cool slightly before pouring to prevent damage.

By using the right tools and techniques, clearing a clogged drain can be a simple and effective DIY fix, without relying solely on vinegar and baking soda.
