The car that's transformed EVs with super-fast charging and near-500-mile range

One of the biggest reservations that many Brits have about buying an electric car is the fear that they will quickly run out of range, reduced to spending hours at a public charger or (even worse) grind to a halt on an empty country street. However, for most new models, that simply is not the case anymore. As battery technology improves, the latest batch of electric cars can comfortably cover more than 400 miles per charge.

Currently, the electric car with the longest range is the Mercedes-Benz EQS, a particularly sleek executive saloon that is capable of covering a staggering 481 miles per charge. One of the main reasons for the EQS' distinctively clean-cut appearance is because Mercedes-Benz wanted to make it the most aerodynamic car in production, which, in conjunction with a massive 118kWh battery, helps to give the luxury EV its colossal range.

Owners do not have to spend much time at the chargers, either, with the Mercedes-Benz EQS' battery being topped up from 10 to 80% in around half an hour. Nevertheless, a starting price of £99,785 means the German luxury car is likely out of most drivers' price range.

Another electric model that can cover a surprisingly high amount of miles is the Audi A6 E-tron, which is able to achieve a range of 463 miles without being plugged in.

A model that is set to arrive to the UK market later in 2025, the new model sticks to the famed A6's roots by being available as a saloon or estate and range of power options, spanning from 362bhp to an impressive 543bhp for the sporty S6.

Whilst rivals like the BMW i5 are somewhat more practical, high-end versions of the A6 E-tron are set to be particularly comfortable, featuring air suspension for a smoother ride, and is priced from £64,330.

However, not all long-range electric cars are made in Germany, with the Chinese and Swedish-owned Polestar 3 also among some of the most practical models on the market.

A relatively sleek SUV, the company's flagship model is able to cover 438 miles on a single charge whilst retaining the practicality of a full-size family car.

The Polestar 3 is also notable for being one of the best electric cars to drive, featuring an impressively adjustable drivetrain that allows users to change the softness of the suspension, make the steering heavier, and choose where the 295bhp motor's power is being delivered.
