Popular store set to close after 141 years in another blow for high street | World | News

A popular hardware store is closing after 144 years of being a staple for hardware supplies in the area. Blackburn's Hardware store in Tipperary Town, Ireland, has been open since 1884, and is now set to close for good as the owners retire and long-time employees, Stephen Hayes, Pat Ryan, and John Heffernan, have already finished their work at the shop. Independent Cllr John O’Heney presented a Certificate of Appreciation to the Blackburn family on Henry Street in Tipperary Town to mark Tom and Bridget Blackburn's retirement, as they prepare to sell off the remaining stock before closing their hardware store.

Cllr O’Heney, of Tipprary Council, wrote on social media: "Today, I presented a Certificate of Appreciation to the Blackburn Family on Henry Street in Tipperary Town on the occasion of their retirement. The Blackburn family have served the community with such great dedication over the generations.

"The store has been an ever-present in the town since 1884. They will be terribly missed by the entire town and wider area.

"Best wishes to staff members Stephen Hayes, Pat Ryan and John Heffernan as they leave today, and to Jimmy Spillane who worked in the store for many years. Tom and Bridget Blackburn will keep the store open for a few weeks to sell remaining stock.

"Happy retirement to Tom and Bridget. We all wish you the very best and continued good health long into the future."

The shop, located on O'Brien Street, was known and loved by many who shared their gratitude online.

Locals shared their thoughts on the news, with one commenting on Facebook: "My grandmother used have long chats with Tom's Mother Mrs Blackburn when I was a child waiting patiently. Lovely traditional old shop, always relaxed atmosphere. "

Another added: "Oh, the best neighbours and best place for all my DIY items. We shall so miss Blackburn’s on O’Brien Street. It will be part of history gone. Best wishes to you Bridget and Tom and all your great staff for the future."

Others said it was the "end of an era".
