Rory McIlroy miles behind Tiger Woods on prize money list despite making history | Golf | Sport

Rory McIlroy has become the first non-American golfer to surpass the $100million (£77,281,500) career earnings landmark on the PGA Tour. The Northern Irishman finished T5 at the Texas Children’s Houston Open, landing him in an exclusive club with Tiger Woods.

McIlroy is not only the first non-American golfer to surpass that figure, but just the second from any country to do so. He joins golf icon Woods in racking up nine figures in total career prize money. Woods leads the way with £93,509,970 ($120,999,166). McIlroy recently overtook Phil Mickelson and will want to bank even more at the Masters.

The 35-year-old’s victory at the Players Championship earlier this month saw him surpass Mickelson, who joined the LIV Golf tour in 2022. That triumph earned McIlroy £3,477,667 ($4.5m) and his performance in Texas meant he had collected a little over nine figures in dollars. McIlroy’s total career earnings are £77,317,750 ($100,046,906) from 262 total appearances.

McIlroy’s next event will be the Masters. It remains the only major he has not won, meaning victory at Augusta would complete the career slam. McIlroy has also gone over a decade without winning a major championship.

Despite some recent impressive performances, McIlroy is not entirely happy with his game and says he will spend the next few weeks ironing out his weaknesses ahead of the Masters. He will be working with his coach, Michael Bannon.

Speaking on the course after his performance in Texas, McIlroy said: “I still feel like I’ve got some stuff to work on. I still don’t think like my game is absolutely 100 per cent under the control I would want, but it’s nice to have a week to work on some things.

“I’ve got my coach, Michael Bannon, coming in tomorrow, so we’ll be working at home and making sure [the] game feels good going into The Masters.”

McIlroy will also have treatment on an issue with his right shoulder. The four-time major champion said he was feeling discomfort in the area but did not suggest that it would cause him any issues at the Masters. He said: “I’ll get some treatment on that [this week] and make sure that that’s okay going into Augusta.”
