Hydrangeas have now begun growing and will be ready to blossom into flowers in late spring, as long as they have the right neighbouring plants. Now that the weather is getting warmer there will be many pests creeping in the garden and companion planting is a simple yet effective way to keep the worst plant eating insects away. 

Having the right plants next to your hydrangeas can also improve the nutrients in soil and help it retain more moisture so its flowers will grow to their full potential without any stress. Lindsey Griffith, a gardening expert from Great Garden Plants has shared some of the best plants to grow near hydrangeas that are not only practical but will enhance a garden’s beauty. 

What are the best plants to grow near hydrangeas?

Ferns

Ferns are one of the best companion plants for hydrangeas as keep the soil moist and cool which makes them fantastic to have around the base of hydrangeas in the summer 

Hydrangeas need to be constantly weeded as they are very hungry shrubs that cannot have unwanted plants stealing nutrients from the soil

However, ferns work as a natural ground cover to suppress ferns without stealing resources as they grow at a slower rate compared to weeds.

Lindsey said: “Create contrasting foliage shapes and textures by adding ferns between and in front of hydrangea hedges. Ferns can also add a tropical feel to your shady garden area!”

Astilbes 

Astilbes are great to plant near hydrangeas for aesthetic reasons are they are known for their delicate feathery flowers which look beautiful contrasting the bigger and bolder hydrangea blooms.

Both astilbes and hydrangeas will enjoy the same growing conditions and begin to bloom at the same time so will look fantastic in a spring or summer garden. 

However, astilbes tend to bloom longer than hydrangeas so you will have a colourful garden display even when hydrangeas stop flowering. 

Just like hydrangeas, astilbes are very low maintenance so you will can a striking flower patch without having to spend time or effort caring for them. 

Lindsey said: "The vibrant colors and playful textures from astilbe make it a whimsical addition to your hydrangea hedge. Just make sure to keep the soil near your astilbe moist for the showy flower plumes to continue all season long."

Hostas

Both hydrangeas and hostas thrive when placed near the shade and also love moist yet well-drained soil which makes them perfect to plant together. 

Hostas are known for their big fleshy leaves which are known to attract slugs, and are often planted next to hydrangeas to distract these pests to keep them away from hydrangea blooms. 

The leaves on hostas can also shade hydrangeas from harsh afternoon sun which helps greatly reduce the risk of dehydration in the summer. 

Lindsey said: “When gardeners think of popular shade plants, hosta is one of the first that comes to mind! Add near the base of your oakleaf or bigleaf hydrangeas to create contrasting glossy foliage.”
