Speaking on his YouTube channel, Scotty said: “Today I’m going to show you how to make your engine last a really long time. 

“Yes this engine has 389,000 miles and it still runs like a clock. Then oil and filters have been changed every 5,000 miles.

“Oil is cheap, engines are very expensive, the coolant has been changed once every five years. 

“It’s got that Tiyita pink coolant, you don’t want corroded coolant to eat up your engine.

“And if you want your engine to last, don’t redline it into the red. That wears things out faster. 

“And if your engine has a rubber timing belt like this, change it every 100,000 miles so no damage is done to the engine. Simple things to do to keep your complex engine running hundreds of thousands of miles.”

According to webuyanycar, the average lifespan of second-hand models is likely to be around the 200,000 mile mark. They stress vehicles that have been particularly well-maintained could last for 300,000 miles or beyond. 

However, motorists took to YouTube to praise Scotty’s comments with many individuals showing off how they had managed to keep their car running for decades.

@9mmARMan commented: “I've changed my oil every 3000 miles since I bought my K1500 Z71 with a 5.7 new in 1994. Not even a puff of smoke on startup and other than 5 starters and a water pump, I haven't done a single repair to the engine in just under 400,000 miles.”

@joshuaglibert5072 added: “I'm still driving my dad's 2000 Nissan Frontier, with over 261K miles on it. 

“Basic care and maintenance over a 25 year period and only an occasional replacement of a part that wears out, but it starts and runs every damn  time.”
