Tens of thousands at major rallies in Yemen after deadly US airstrikes

Tens of thousands of people protested in Houthi-controlled parts of Yemen on Monday, two days after the US launched a wave of deadly airstrikes on the country that killed at least 53 people and injured almost 100 more.

Demonstrators waved placards and assault rifles, chanting “Death to America, death to Israel”, at a huge protest in the capital Sana’a, while rallies were also held in Saada, Dhamar, Hodeida and Amran.

US officials say the airstrikes, which Washington says were punishment for the Iran-backed Houthi rebels attacking Red Sea shipping, were also designed to signal a new assertive approach to Iran.

US carries out fresh airstrikes on Yemen on Monday with over 50 people already killed in American attacks

The Houthis’ Al Masirah TV – which was founded and is owned by the rebel group - is reporting that the US carried out new airstrikes on Yemen on Monday. The Red Sea port city of Hodeidah and the al Jawf governorate, north of the capital Sana’a, were said to have been targeted. We have not yet independently verified these reports but the US Central Command (Centcom) posted a video on X this morning appearing to show a fighter jet taking off from an aircraft carrier. In the post, it said American forces had continued operations “against Iranian-backed Houthi terrorists”.

The US launched a wave of deadly airstrikes on Saturday with the stated aim of deterring the rebel group from attacking Red Sea shipping. The airstrikes hit Sana’a and other provinces, including Saada, the Houthi rebels’ stronghold on the border with Saudi Arabia, killing at least 53 people, including several children, according to officials.

Houthi leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi said on Sunday that his fighters would target US ships in the Red Sea as long as the US continues its attacks on Yemen. “If they continue their aggression, we will continue the escalation,” he said in a televised speech.

In the early hours of Monday morning, the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels said they had carried out two missile and drone attacks in 24 hours that included targeting the USS Harry S Truman, an American aircraft carrier, in the Red Sea. There was no immediate comment on the record from the US about the attacks claimed by the Houthis.
