Bruno Guimaraes breaks down in tears and gives touching interview after Newcastle win cup | Football | Sport

Bruno Guimaraes broke down in tears after helping Newcastle land their first domestic trophy for 70 years. The Magpies were in inspired form at Wembley as they overcame favourites Liverpool 2-1 in the Carabao Cup final.

Newcastle took a shock lead just before half time as Dan Burn rose to meet Kieran Trippier’s corner. The north east giants then doubled their advantage in the early stages of the second half as Alexander Isak lashed the ball into the back of the net moments after having another strike disallowed. Liverpool substitute Federico Chiesa pulled a goal back late on to set up a nervy finale, but Newcastle shut up shop to clinch the silverware.

“It's all for these fans. They deserve everything. When I first came here I said I wanted to put my name in history,” Guimaraes gushed as he spoke to Sky Sports after the showdown.

“We can now say we are the champions again. This is one of the best days of my life. I don't have any words. It's the best day of my life. For them (the fans) it's like the World Cup.

“People have grown up and not seen us as champions. My first year as captain of this club and it's one of the best days. This is unbelievable.

“This is my second home. We are making history. Some day when I leave this club I want the fans to sing my name the way they do to [Alan] Shearer. He text me before the game. I'm so emotional today.”

A host of Newcastle icons reacted to the Magpies’ victory, with former goalkeeper Shay Given admitting: “That last 10 minutes of extra time, I was going through it.

“I was getting emotional myself, seeing the faces of the fans and the players. We have waited so long for a trophy, any trophy.”

And ex-striker Les Ferdinand exclaimed: “I am so, so happy for these supporters to go home and celebrate. They deserve it, just look at them.”

Meanwhile, Liverpool hero Jamie Carragher heaped praise on the champions as he added: “Newcastle didn't just win today, they battered Liverpool.

“I find it difficult to be too critical, given what Liverpool look like they will go on to achieve. Newcastle are a great Premier League team and they have wiped the floor with them today.”

The result at Wembley marked the end of a miserable week for Liverpool. The Reds were knocked out of the Champions League on Tuesday night after losing to Paris Saint-Germain following a penalty shootout. And their only shot at silverware this season now rests on the Premier League title. The Reds are 12 points clear of Arsenal at the top of the table.
