McDonald's launches popular US menu item in the UK

While mint may be an acquired taste for some when it comes to shakes, it has long been a cherished flavour for many. McDonald's has introduced a much-loved US menu item to the UK but fans have limited time to try it before it goes again. The fast food chain has brought the Shamrock Shake to the UK for the very first time in honour of St Patrick's Day.

The shake is a beloved treat in the United States but has never been offered in the UK until now,  but it will disappear again on March 25. Not only is the seasonal shake available in the US to celebrate St Patrick's Day, but it can also be purchased in Ireland and Canada.

Available from March 12 the drink is a peppermint-flavoured syrup blended with a creamy milkshake base.

The Shamrock Shake comes in small, medium, or large sizes for £2.19, £2.69, and £3.09, though prices may vary by location.

In addition to the Shamrock Shake, McDonald's has made other recent changes to its UK menu, including bringing back the Philly Cheese Stack, Raspberry and White Chocolate Pie, and Mars McFlurry.

The Shamrock Shake was created in 1967 by Hal Rosen, a McDonald's franchise owner in Connecticut and was actually first lemon-lime flavoured shake made with vanilla ice cream, lemon sherbet, and vanilla syrup.

By 1970, the Shamrock Shake had become a green-coloured vanilla milkshake, and by 1973, it was switched to the current mint-flavoured version.

Over the years, McDonald's has introduced various iterations of the drink, including the Shamrock Sundae and limited-time flavoured versions like the Shamrock Mocha and Shamrock Hot Chocolate.
