3 houseplants to put in your bedroom that can help you sleep better

If you want to start the day full of energy, then getting a good night's sleep is crucial. According to the NHS, most adults should aim to get around seven to nine hours of shut-eye each night, but this will vary from person to person.

Of course, this is easier said than done. There are so many factors which can affect sleep, from work and stress to the environment in your bedroom. So if you've been struggling to get a deep, uninterrupted sleep recently, then one expert on social media has the solution - houseplants.

TikToker Michael, also know as The Mediterranean Gardener, has named three houseplants which can potentially improve sleep by boosting air quality.

He said: "Did you know that some plants continue to release oxygen into the night, making them perfect to have in your bedroom?

"We all know that plants take in carbon dioxide and give us oxygen through the day but at night photosynthesis stops and only carbon dioxide diffuses out."

Snake plant

This striking plant, also known as Mother-in-law's Tongue, doesn't just look great but can also help you sleep better.

According to the pros at Easy Plant, they reduce allergens in their environment by releasing oxygen and moisture into the air, lessening the impact of dander and dust

Michael added: "It can survive a long period of neglect and needs little watering."

Orchid

Coming in so many beautiful colours, the orchid is one of the most elegant-looking plants around. However, it's also very useful, especially when it comes to drawing out toxins from the air.

In particular, the plant reliably absorbs xylene, toluene and formaldehyde from the air, creating a healthy indoor environment, according to the green-fingered experts at Plantura.

Michael added: "This beautiful flowering plant will oxygenate the air in your room at night."

Areca palm

You might also known this plant as the golden palm, butterfly palm and yellow palm. The Areca palm was included in a NASA study on air-purifying plants and was proven to be the most effective plant out of all those tested at breaking down harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) found in modern homes, says The Stem.

Michael said: "With incredible jungle like stems this beautiful plant prefers indirect sunlight and a light mist a few times a week."
