Barcelona match postponed minutes before kick-off after first-team doctor dies | Football | Sport

Barcelona's match with Osasuna was postponed on Saturday night following the death of first-team doctor Carles Minarro Garcia. The two sides were due to face off at the Lluis Companys Olympic Stadium at 20:00 (GMT), but the game was suspended around 20 minutes prior to kick-off.

A statement from Barcelona said: "FC Barcelona is sorry to announce the sad news of the death of first team doctor Carles Minarro Garcia this Saturday afternoon. As a result, the game between FC Barcelona and CA Osasuna has been postponed until a later date. The FC Barcelona Board of Directors and players wish to express their utmost sympathy to the family and friends of the deceased, and join them in mourning at such a difficult time."

Garcia spent more than seven years in Barcelona's medical department, first joining up with the club in 2017. Osasuna have paid tribute to him with a statement of their own.

It reads: "Club Atletico Osasuna wishes to express its deepest condolences to the family of Dr. Carles Minarro Garcia and send a strong embrace to the entire staff of F.C. Barcelona and its fans during this difficult time. Rest in peace. Goian bego."

After the decision was taken to postpone the match at short notice following Garcia's passing on Saturday afternoon, La Liga bosses have confirmed that a rearranged date will soon be announced.

Their statement begins: "La Liga regrets the passing of Dr. Carles Minarro, FC Barcelona’s first-team doctor, and announces that, for this reason, today's match between FC Barcelona and Osasuna has been postponed, pending the decision of the single judge of Competitions.

"LaLiga would like to express its deepest condolences to his family, friends, the club, and its supporters, and shares in their sorrow. The new date and time for the match will be announced soon."

Barca are in the thick of a tight La Liga title race with only 12 matches left to play. Manager Hansi Flick currently holds a one-point lead over Atletico Madrid and a three-point lead over Real Madrid as he looks to win the title in his first season at the helm.

The Catalan giants are on a six-game La Liga victory streak, winning each of their last three without conceding. They also hold a 1-0 aggregate lead over Benfica heading into the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie next week.
