Meghan Markle adds 'ridiculous' ingredient to scrambled eggs to make them fluffy

Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, has stunned and perplexed fans with her secret to creating the perfect 'fluffy' scrambled eggs, as featured in her eight-part Netflix series, With Love, Meghan. The mum-of-two dropped this culinary bombshell while cooking Korean fried chicken alongside Korean-American chef Roy Choi.

During the session, Choi included cold sparkling water to his batter, prompting Meghan to query: "Does the sparkling water just help make the batter extra crisp?", with Choi confirming, "Yes, exactly."

It was this moment that led Meghan, who shares two kids with Prince Harry, to divulge her own kitchen secret, explaining how she adds a splash of sparkling water into her scrambled eggs. "Do you ever put cold sparkling water in your eggs before you scramble them?" she asked the chef, going on to state: "Same sort of effect - helps them rise, get a little fluffy, it's great. Just a tiny little splash."

While some food enthusiasts are eager to test out the duchess's trick, it has left others scratching their heads in disbelief. The reactions poured in swiftly on TikTok, with one critic bluntly slamming the hack as "ridiculous". Another skeptic said: "'Do you ever just put cold sparkling water in your scrambled eggs'. Not even the King of England's Chef thinks that way."

Meanwhile, another bewildered user questioned: "Who puts water in their scrambled eggs?"

But others were delighted by the tip. One individual, echoing Meghan Markle's cooking method, shared on X: "Meghan Markle adds sparkling water to her eggs to make them fluffy, so now I add sparkling water to my eggs to make them fluffy," Another TikTok user agreed, stating: "Adding soda water (doesn't need to be cold though) to eggs and scrambling is the best, so she's right on that, been doing it for years." A third added: "I loved it! What sweet touches and tips she shared!" Interestingly, the former Suits star isn't the pioneer of this culinary trick.

William Dissen, a chef at The Market Place restaurant in Asheville, North Carolina, USA, revealed the technique in a 2023 video. The science behind it is simple: whisking eggs introduces air into the mixture, and adding carbonated water amplifies this effect.

In his video, Chef William explained how he likes to "elevate" soft scrambled eggs with sparkling water. "When the water and the eggs hit the pan those little sparkling water bubbles expand and it really makes the fluffiest, lightest eggs," he elucidated in a YouTube video.

All episodes of With Love, Meghan are now streaming on Netflix.
