The three flowers you should plant now according to the experts

Green fingered Brits are out in force as the arrival of spring beckons. Many will be focussing on their gardens to ensure the correct pruning and planting takes place before summer, ensuring a colourful garden to be proud of.

And a gardening expert has issued some crucial advice when it comes to what to plant now to gurantee an early display of vivid colour in your beds. By ensuring you follow some extra vital tips, you can also rest assured that your outdoor space will be primed for growth and continue to flourish all spring and summer.

Horticultural experts at Cherry Lane Garden Centres are advising gardeners to plant these three flowers sooner rather than later.

“Spring is the time to start planting those summer flowering bulbs that will brighten your garden in the coming months,” they explained.

“Choose varieties that thrive in your garden’s conditions and plant them at the recommended depth for the best results."

They further advised the three flowers to plant now include dahlias, lilies and gladiolus to add that extra burst of colour and delight in your gardens.

Dahlias are advised to be planted in early spring, undercover to begin with, and once all chances of frost have passed, which is usually in late May or June, they can then be moved or planted outside.

Likewise, lilies should be planted in spring, and gladiolus too, as it allows them to bloom throughout the summer.

The experts added: “It’s also the perfect time to plant early potatoes.

“Choose a sunny, well-drained spot, and plant your seed potatoes about 10-15 cm deep.

“With a little care, you’ll be enjoying your homegrown spuds in no time.”

The garden experts continued their advice, adding that “by staying ahead of the curve and completing these essential tasks, your garden will thrive as the temperatures rise."

And to ensure your lawn matches your colourful flowers, the experts added that springtime is also the ideal period to dust off the mower.

“Mowing helps promote healthy growth and keeps your lawn looking neat and tidy.

“Start by mowing the grass on a higher setting to avoid cutting too much in one go.”
