Gardeners urged to add two key plants for vibrant colour in spring

Gardeners looking to brighten up their green spaces soon can start by adding some early bloomers for some beautiful colours come spring.

An expert has shared with Express.co.uk two plants that stand out for their stunning hues and reliable growth: cyclamen and primroses.

Not only will they add colour, but they also thrive in cooler weather, ensuring your garden looks lively even in the early months.

Emma Fell, Head of Horticulture at Hillier Garden Centres and Nurseries, recommended both of these plants for their long-lasting beauty and ease of care.

"Cyclamen are versatile and bring delicate colour to shaded spots, making them perfect for gardens where sunlight is limited," she explained.

Hardy varieties such as Cyclamen ‘Coum’ and Cyclamen ‘hederifolium’ are particularly ideal for adding a splash of pink, purple, or white to your garden.

These perennials bloom from late summer through to early spring, offering joy throughout the colder months.

“They are perfect for planting under trees, along borders, or in containers," said Emma, highlighting their adaptability.

Cyclamen also thrive in rock gardens, where their delicate flowers stand out against rocky backdrops.

These hardy plants are low-maintenance, needing only a shaded spot and well-drained soil to flourish, whether planted in beds or hanging baskets.

Primroses, a native British wildflower, are another excellent choice for spring colour, and according to Emma, “primroses are easy to grow and come in a variety of colours and forms, adding versatility to your garden design.”

These cheerful flowers are perfect for both borders and containers, transforming any space into a vibrant display.

To plant primroses, space them six to 12 inches apart and plant them four to six inches deep in moist, well-drained soil.

“Primroses love part-shade,” Emma noted, “so they’re fantastic for planting under shrubs or trees.”

After planting, it’s essential to water primroses thoroughly and keep the soil moist throughout the season - adding a layer of mulch will help retain moisture and protect the roots.

Both cyclamen and primroses are perfect for gardeners looking to introduce vibrant colour to their gardens early in the coming season.
