30p trick to transform 'stiff and scratchy' towels into 'fluffy' ones

Towels can become rough very quickly, which doesn’t feel nice on the skin. This is often caused by a build-up of fabric softener.

The way in which you dry your towels can also impact the end result.

To help keep your towels in top-tip condition, Molly Freshwater, founder of Secret Linen Store, has put together various tips to follow.

These include limiting the amount of detergent you use, choosing the right temperautre as well as a staple household ingredient to add to your wash.

The expert said: “High-quality bath towels should feel thick and indulgent; however, because of this, the detergent can be harder to remove during rinse cycles than other materials.

“This will accumulate over time and may cause your towels to feel hard and stiff.”

It’s important to use a gentle detergent as towels are made from natural fibres like cotton, and harsh ones may cause permanent damage.

If your towels are feeling “stiff and scratchy”, a “simple trick” might be lurking inside your kitchen cupboards.

The expert explained: “To soften towels, try adding 250ml of white vinegar to your wash alongside your regular detergent.

“Just pour the vinegar directly into the drum before loading your towels, and start the cycle as usual.

“Don’t worry, despite vinegar’s strong smell, it won’t linger on your towels.”

White vinegar works by breaking down any detergent residue or mineral build-up in the fibres, which can leave towels feeling rough.

It helps to restore softness and absorbency without harsh chemicals, leaving your towels fresh and cosy.

White vinegar can be picked up for as little as 30p from supermarkets such as Tesco.

It’s also important to choose the right temperature when washing towels, staying away from super hot temperatures.

The expert noted: “Like harsh detergents, hot water can strip the natural fibres of their softness, leaving them rough and less absorbent.

“To keep them fresh and soft, we recommend washing your towels at a cooler temperature, between 30C and 40C.”
