Gardeners urged to put milk bottles in their garden

With the ongoing period of cold spells, it is crucial to take extra care of the plants in your garden.

To assist you with that, a gardening expert has shared an unusual hack that will keep your plants healthy even during the freezing weather.

Experts from Farm Flavour suggested putting milk jugs (or bottles) in the garden. Odd it may sound, but gardeners are encouraged to follow this simple trick for several reasons.

According to the experts, milk jugs are creative containers for overwintering plants and protecting young ones during spring cold snaps.

One of the most common ways is to use them as mini greenhouses or "cloches" to protect young plants from frost and pests.

By cutting the bottom off a milk jug and placing it over seedlings, gardeners can create a warm and controlled environment that helps plants grow, especially during colder months.

They said: “If you have room to save your empty milk jugs, now is the time to start stocking up.

“You can either cut off the top and place it upside down over your seedlings to shelter them from the cold and wind, or you can fill several jugs with warm water and place them in a circle around each plant to provide a little extra heat.”

Another popular use is turning milk jugs into self-watering containers.

By filling the base with water and covering the opening with cheesecloth, they can provide consistent moisture to plants like herbs and leafy greens.

Additionally, they can be used for winter seed sowing, allowing cold-hardy plants to germinate early by simulating a greenhouse effect.

Milk jugs also serve as DIY watering cans, compost bins, bird feeders, and even thermal mass heaters in greenhouses when filled with water to absorb and release heat.

Experts believe that these creative recycling methods make them a sustainable and cost-effective tool for gardeners.
