Pilot reveals one thing you should always do if you have a window seat | World | News

The cold weather in the UK is continuing to linger, so many of us are already dreaming of a holiday.

Whether you’ve already booked your flight or you’re still planning your escape, there’s one small but significant detail to consider when flying - especially if you're fortunate enough to have a window seat.

From setting up your in-flight entertainment to arranging your snacks, getting settled for a flight is a familiar routine. But when it comes to window shades, passengers can have varying preferences.

While some might want the view, others might crave the darkness for rest.

According to a seasoned pilot, there's one thing you should always do if you find yourself in the coveted window seat.

Captain Steve often shares travel tips and airline trivia on his TikTok account.

In one of his videos, he highlighted the importance of "shade etiquette" when seated by the window.

While it may seem like a minor issue, the way you handle the window shade can make a big difference to the comfort of everyone sitting around you.

According to Steve, when you first sit down, it’s common to wonder whether you should keep the window shade open or closed.

However, as other passengers take their seats next to you, the responsibility to adjust the shade falls primarily on you.

He explained: "The other passengers come, and they sit in those other two seats next to you, and they don't really have a say in where the shade goes, really, because you're kind of the owner of the shade.

"So do you reach out to them and say, ‘Would you like the shade up or down?’ I always do."

The pilot suggests that this "small courtesy" can go a long way in ensuring a peaceful flight.

If you’re in the window seat and the sun is beaming through, it can be uncomfortable for the other passengers who might not be able to adjust it themselves.

Steve highlights that it’s especially considerate if you’re planning to sleep during the flight.

"Once you’re asleep, it’s really hard for others to deal with the sunlight streaming in," he adds.

Asking first could save a lot of discomfort for those seated next to you.

However, not everyone agrees with this approach.

Some passengers feel the window seat is theirs to control, especially since they’ve paid for the privilege.

Comments on the video reflect a range of opinions, with some people arguing, "I paid for the window seat, I use the window," while others point out that the seat is sometimes chosen to keep the shade closed for the entire flight.

It’s clear that while Captain Steve advocates for being considerate, there are varying views on this topic.

Ultimately, whether you decide to open or close the window shade, the key takeaway is to be mindful of the people around you and communicate politely.

After all, a simple question like, "Would you like the shade up or down?" can make the flight more comfortable for everyone involved.

So, next time you're in that prized window seat, remember that a little courtesy goes a long way.
