Gravy will be 'perfect every time' if you start with one ingredient

When it comes to comfort food, nothing beats a good gravy.

Whether poured over a roast dinner, a pie or some chips - there are so many ways to tuck into the classic dish. But there's a secret to getting it right, according to an online cook.

Jon Watts says the secret to a "perfect" gravy is quite simple, and he shared his recipe on TikTok. If you want to make it without using granules, he said this is the next best option.

He said the gravy can be made in as little as 20 minutes, and he starts by melting 80g of butter in a pan. He then adds an equal amount of plain flour and stirs.

He cooks this for a few minutes until it starts to turn a dark brown colour. From here, he pours in 180ml of red wine, and mixes it well before adding two tablespoons of red currant jelly.

He advised to cook this for another minute before adding in one litre of chicken stock whilst whisking the whole time. He told people to bring this to a boil and let it simmer until it thickens.

Season the mixture with salt and pepper and add a dash of Worcestershire sauce. He said you can cook it until it's as thick as you prefer.

According to the cook, that's all it takes to make a good gravy, and it can be whipped up with ingredients many people already have at home. That's what makes it a totally "no-nonsense" method.

The video has been viewed over 3,000 times since it was shared, and people were quick to comment too. They had all sorts of thoughts and ideas.

One person said: "I make gravy using this recipe all the time. Just want to say thanks. Making a good homemade chicken stock is the key to it being super tasty."

Another wrote: "I make a pretty mean gravy that's super similar, so I'm keen to try this." A third replied: "Just made this for later - it tastes delicious."

Meanwhile, others weren't keen to give up their gravy granules. It appears, when it comes to cooking, some people just like ease.

Someone else chimed in with: "Gravy granules. Hot water, ready in five." One more added: "What can be used instead of alcohol?"
