How to keep milk and butter fresh for longer

Proper storage can make all the difference in how long perishable items stay fresh, especially milk and butter.

According to storage expert Scott Evans, owner of Pink Storage, many of us are making a crucial mistake by storing milk, butter, and other quick-spoiling foods in the wrong spots.

Instead of the commonly used fridge door or top shelves, these items should be placed on the bottom shelf, at the back of the fridge, where temperatures remain consistently cooler.

“Foods that are most costly and spoil the quickest should be kept towards the bottom shelves,” explained Scott.

“This includes milk rather than its typical fridge door slot as well as eggs, butter, cheese, and meat.”

The cooler, more stable temperature of the bottom shelf helps preserve these foods, keeping them fresh for a longer period.

In addition to the right location, Scott highlights the importance of not overfilling your fridge.

"When placing your food in the fridge try not to put anything too tall at the back as it could block the fridge's vents,” he added.

“You also don't want to overfill your fridge as you will stop the air circulating as much and cause your food to spoil quicker."

Although storing butter on the bottom shelf may seem like an unconventional choice, Scott insists it can help extend its shelf life.

“If you like your butter to be at room temperature then cut a section off and leave it in a butter dish in the cupboard, then put the rest in the fridge to make it last a little longer,” he suggested.

Meanwhile, the upper shelves should be reserved for foods that spoil easily with moisture, like berries and herbs.

By following these simple but effective storage tips, you can ensure your milk, butter, and other perishable items stay fresh for as long as possible, ultimately reducing food waste and making your fridge more efficient.
