If you've noticed a white, chalky substance on the inside of your kettle, it's likely limescale.

Limescale is caused by hard water evaporating and leaving behind minerals such as calcium and magnesium carbonate.

While limescale doesn't cause harm to people when they drink it, it can damage your kettle and reduce their lifespan.

Most people use harsh chemicals to remove limescale from kettles, but these are expensive and can be difficult to rinse.

Another common cleaning method for removing kettle limescale is using white vinegar. While this natural method is somewhat effective, it can leave behind an unpleasant smell and often takes lots of rinsing to fully remove.

With this in mind, cleaning expert Manish Jain, founder of the Ministry of Cleaning, has shared how to remove kettle limescale using another natural method - rice.

All you need is a spoonful of uncooked rice and some water to remove the stubborn limescale deposits.

The rice is abrasive and should gently scrub off the limescale without causing damage to the kettle.

Mr Jain told Express.co.uk: "Combine a spoon of uncooked rice and water into your kettle, shake it up and rinse. You’ll find that the rice has scrubbed off any limescale thanks to its rough texture.

"This means you don’t need to buy expensive and harsh chemical cleaners, and you don’t need to worry about damaging the inside of your kettle either or inhaling dangerous fumes.

"Always rinse your kettle thoroughly after cleaning to avoid residue affecting the taste of your water."
