Plant 'unusual' shrub now for 'beautiful' flowers in Spring

Choosing flowers for your garden can be a really fun task, and you know that if you want all the benefits of beautiful blooms, it’s important to plant your seeds earlier in the year so the flowers can thrive.

If you’re lucky enough to have an outdoor space, you may have realised that there are some parts of the garden that are in partial shade, where many flowers don’t grow well.

But @gardening.with.ish has shared that there’s a flower you can plant in a “partial shady spot” and if you “treat them right, they’ll come back year after year”.

So what is this beautiful and unusual flower you can get from supermarkets for just £2?

It’s an “early flower in the season,” and they’re called Bleeding Hearts.

He said they’re “amazing [to go somewhere] where you’re not sure where to place something,” gushing about their “amazing heart-shaped flowers”.

Ish said they can be planted “directly in the ground,” and they’ll reach sizes of “about two feet by three feet”. “They’re quite a decent-sized bush,” he shared. Alternatively, you can put them into a “good-sized pot,” and when it’s growing well, transfer it “directly into the soil”.

“Bleeding Hearts like well-drained soil, but if you can get some that will retain a little bit of moisture, they’ll be a little bit happier,” he shared, then explaining he was using a potting mix, mixed in with a bit of Mad Moisture to “make sure it holds it all in but is still very free-draining”.

Ish said they should “ideally” be planted around three to four inches deep, saying to “chuck in the root” and “add the extra compost” that comes with it.

Once you’ve done that, you should “give it a good cover up with the rest of your compost”.

Ish then explained: “Once you’ve covered it with the soil, just give it a really, really good water.”

“Now remember, because it’s cold outside, this is currently in its dormant state, so don’t expect it to really be doing anything. It’s not until probably the end of the month that you’ll start to see some sign of life,” Ish shared.

He said you should expect flowers around “May or June time”.

Ish then said he was going to keep the Bleeding Hearts in the greenhouse and to identify what the plant was, he ripped the bottom of the label off and popped it gently into the top of the soil.

“I’ll plant this out in about a month or so, but until then, I’ll store it,” he finished the video by sharing.
