New travel rules order tourists to cover up in Portugal holiday spot | World | News

Tourists visiting the popular holiday destination of Albufeira could be banned from wandering around in their swimwear under new plans.

The city on Portugal’s famous southern Algarve coast is looking to revise its code of conduct and proposed plans to prohibit people from being partially or completely naked in public areas.

Anyone found breaking the rules could receive a hefty fine.

People found partially naked, for example wearing a bikini or shorts, could be fined up to £1,250 (€1,500.00)

The proposed document says the rule around swimwear will not apply to beaches, bathing spots, the areas providing access to them and in external hotel areas, most likely pools.

Those caught completely naked could be fined up to almost £1,500 (€1,800.00).

The rules also extend to terraces that can be seen from public spaces.

In 2023, more than 1.1m Brits visited Albufeira, a former fishing village, which offers a buzzing nightlife, sandy beaches and sunny climes.

It is popular with hen and stag dos, with partygoers flocking to the bars and clubs that line the famous strip, which has become infamous for debauchery, in the new part of the resort.

Under the plans, any sexual act carried out in public has a maximum fine of £1,500.

Anyone caught drinking alcohol, urinating or defecating in public areas can also expect to be punished.

The proposal is currently out for public consultation but, according to the BBC, could be in place in time for the summer.

It follows similar rules introduced into other popular European destinations, including Barcelona, Spain, Dubrovnik and Croatia.

Anti-mass tourism demonstrations were held across the continent last year.

Protesters say mass tourism is causing issues including increased rent prices and overcrowding.
