I tried 20p home remedy for stubborn soap scum and it was impressive

White vinegar is a well-known natural cleaner that has been a household staple for generations.

While it works wonders on its own, combining it with other ingredients can sometimes boost its cleaning power.

One viral hack suggests mixing vinegar with washing-up liquid to tackle stubborn soap scum, particularly on shower screens.

Intrigued by the claims, I decided to put this two-ingredient method to the test.

According to science, vinegar's acidic nature gets rid of hard water marks and limescale that cling to shower screens, while washing up liquid cuts through grease and oil.

As anyone with a shower knows, its easy for residue to build up on screens, especially when showers are in use every day.

Excited to try this method for myself, I estimated that just using a few drops of vinegar that cost me £2 for the bottle, and a drop of washing up liquid that was less than a £1 - this homemade cleaning solution only cost me around £20p.

To see how well this works, I started by decanting the washing-up liquid into a mixing bowl. Next, I put the white vinegar into the microwave to heat up for roughly one minute.

While this might sound like madness, the process of heating up vinegar enhances it's solubility, making it more effective at breaking down stubborn hard water stains.

I then added the washing up liquid and gave it a good stir. Having simply measured with my heart I did wonder if I had got the mixture quite right.

I applied some of my new cleaning solution to the shower door and gave it a good wipe over.

While at first, it didn't seem to be making much difference, the addition of a cleaning sponge with a scouring pad made the cleaning power much more obvious.

For a test run, I was pleasantly surprised by how much soap residue I managed to remove just by giving one door a quick once-over.

Using two products that I keep in my cupboard, I was able to make my shower door look nice and shiny without the need for pricey products or nasty chemicals.

I do fully intend to give it another go, but for a first time attempt, I'm impressed.

Just one downside though, I will need to find a way to stop my hands and my bathroom from smelling like a chip shop.
