MotoGP star hospitalised after scary crash during Sepang test | F1 | Sport

Reigning MotoGP champion Jorge Martin is recovering in hospital after suffering a serious crash during the test at the Sepang International Circuit.

The Aprilla driver had two falls in pre-season, the first of which came at the opening series of corners. Martin managed to remount after his first fall, but his second was more serious.

The Spaniard made it through Turn One, but after dipping right and flicking left, he highsided on his RS-GP, sending him airborne. Martin spun 360 degrees in the air before crashing down onto the Sepang asphalt.

Martin was subsequently taken to the infield medical centre after the ambulance was deployed, and he was then moved to a local hospital after suffering pain in his foot and hand.

"Jorge Martin after a crash in Turn Two, has been taken to the circuit medical centre," an initial team statement explained. "He will undergo further medical checks, as soon as we will have an official medical update, we will inform you."

A second statement added: "Jorge will be taken to Aurelius Hospital in Nilai to undergo medical checks. So far he is suffering pain at his left foot and right hand."

Martin was not the only one to suffer in Sepang. Fellow Aprilla racer Raul Fernandez suffered a fractured metacarpal bone in his left hand, and a broken toe after two separate incidents.

MotoGP's reigning champion now faces a nervous wait to be declared fit as the opening race of the 2025 campaign closes in. The Thailand Grand Prix will take place on March 2nd at the Chang International Circuit in Buriram.

The 27-year-old won his second MotoGP crown in 2024, fending off the charge of Pecco Bagnaia with his immense consistency. Martin won just three races to his rival's 11 last term but finished on the podium in all but four of the 20 Grands Prix.
