Man, 97, quoted £700 for garden job gets surprise of life

When a man heard that a pensioner had been quoted a fortune for a simple garden job, he knew he had to take action.

Mike was horrified that the 97-year-old was asked to stump up £700 for some basic grass-trimming. So he decided to surprise him by doing the job completely for free.

The only thing he asked for in return was to film the whole transformation for his Garden Yardz Mowing TikTok page. His 24,000 followers love seeing the before and after footage of Mike clearing out yards.

And his latest clip was no exception – as the gardener tackled some pampas grass that looked like it had seen better days. He got to work with a strimmer, clearing off any dead debris and making the area a lot more manageable.

Mike captioned the post: "Thoughts? 97 year old man quoted £700 for his grass cut." The short video garnered hundreds of likes – and people were quick to share their thoughts in the comments section.

One wrote: "Why are there so many people willing to ‘rip off’ older people? Well done you for looking after him, Respect to you!"

Another said: "Karma works both ways 10 fold. Your kindness will return to you." And a third added: "So kind of you to do this."

Others were more sceptical of the story though – as they couldn't believe someone would charge so much for such an easy job. One asked: "No one would charge that. Who was the quoter?"

But Mike defended himself in a separate comment, saying upcharging pensioners is sadly very common. He wrote: "That's the world we live in unfortunately."

Simple ways to make your garden look good

Reluctant to call in a gardener to work on your property? There are easy ways to keep your outdoor areas tidy without much time or effort. Try the following...

  1. Keep your lawn neat – mow regularly, trim edges and remove weeds when possible, this will stop your garden from looking overgrown.
  2. Declutter the space – remove unnecessary items, dead plants, or broken pots for a more put-together look.
  3. Prune and trim plants – cut back overgrown shrubs, hedges, and plants to keep them neat.
  4. Add mulch or gravel – fresh mulch in garden beds gives a tidy, uniform look and helps suppress weeds
  5. Plant seasonal flowers – add brightly coloured flowers in pots or beds to create a vibrant and inviting space.
  6. Maintain pathways – sweep pathways and patios regularly to remove dirt, leaves, and debris.
