Gardening tasks to start in February - expert tips

While gardeners prepare to welcome spring in their gardens, they are being reminded about four key tasks to ensure a vibrant and “fruitful” spring.

Starting early can make a significant difference to the health and growth of a garden as the seasons shift, experts at Crown Pavilions emphasised.

One of the most important jobs regardless of the season is pruning, so it’s absolutely crucial to take the time to trim back overgrown plants and remove any dead or diseased branches to encourage new, healthy growth.

This helps your plants conserve energy, directing it toward fresh, strong shoots that will flourish when the weather warms up.

Another important task is to plant spring-flowering bulbs like tulips, daffodils, and crocuses, giving them the necessary time to establish a strong root system.

This ensures that when the temperatures rise, these bulbs will burst into bloom, adding vibrant colour to your garden early in the season.

Pest control should also be on your radar, as February is the perfect time to inspect your plants for signs of pests or diseases.

Catching problems early can prevent them from spreading and damaging your plants.

Taking action now will keep your garden healthy and pest-free, so your plants can thrive throughout the growing season.

Lastly, don’t forget to prepare your garden beds, clearing away any leftover plant debris, weeds, and dead material from last season.

Enrich the soil by adding compost or well-rotted manure, which will provide the nutrients needed for the upcoming planting season.

A well-prepared bed makes for a more successful growing environment when you're ready to plant your seeds and new plants.

According to Luke Dejahang, Gardening Expert and CEO of Crown Pavilions, these tasks will ensure your garden is ready for the growing season ahead.

He said: “By following these tips, homeowners can ensure that their gardens are well-prepared for the upcoming growing season.

“February is the perfect time to take these steps and give your plants the best possible start for a fruitful spring and summer.”
