Johnny Herbert breaks silence after being axed as F1 steward and hits back at FIA | F1 | Sport

Johnny Herbert says he understands why he was axed by the FIA. The 60-year-old will no longer allowed to steward races from this season because of clashing responsibilities.

Herbert has produced controversial interviews for betting websites, speaking honestly on key topics in F1. This has led to some uproar, particularly coming from Max Verstappen's dad Jos.

As an F1 steward, Herbert was required to be neutral. But giving his take on various incident has led to his dismissal.

Herbert was previously a Sky Sports pundit but he was dropped from the line-up for the 2023 season.

The FIA announced that Herbert was relieved of his duties on Wednesday morning and he has now spoken out on the disappointing news.

"I'm very grateful for the opportunity of being an FIA driver steward and I have thoroughly enjoyed the role I have been involved in over the years," he said.

"It is a difficult job and there are tough decisions that have to be made.

"As stewards, we have and will continue to treat both drivers and team personnel with the utmost respect and remain impartial at all times during all F1 Grand Prix weekends.

"Finally, l'm very grateful to the president and everyone at the FIA for the opportunities that I have been given."

Herbert has been an FIA steward for 15 years but his position has come under threat since the Mexico City Grand Prix, where he criticised Verstappen.

An FIA statement read: "It is with regret that we announce today that Johnny Herbert will no longer fulfil the position of F1 driver steward for the FIA," read the statement.

"Johnny is widely respected and brought invaluable experience and expertise to his role. However, after discussion, it was mutually agreed that his duties as an FIA steward and that of a media pundit were incompatible.

"We thank him for his service and wish him well in his future endeavours."
