Drivers have been urged not to let looking stylish get the better of them behind the wheel, warning that a certain item of clothing could land them huge fines.

In the first few weeks of 2025, various parts of the UK have endured harsh weather, including low temperatures which made many motorists want to wrap up warm when getting behind the wheel.

However, Graham Conway, Managing Director of Select Car Leasing, warned that certain coats could restrict a driver's ability to control their vehicle safely.

He advised: "It's not about banning certain clothes, it's about making sure that drivers can maintain full control of their vehicle.

"It becomes an issue when outfits like coats and bulky boots, that are ideal for keeping out the winter chill, limit a motorist’s ability to steer or use the gear stick properly."

Whilst cold weather may make motorists inclined to put on the warmest clothes they can find, Select Car Leasing warned that doing so could make it difficult to use their car safely.

According to Rule 97 of the Highway Code, drivers must never wear items of clothing and footwear that have the potential to get in the way of controls such as the pedals, handbrake, and steering wheel.

This is to ensure that drivers can quickly and safely control their vehicle in the event of a sudden scenario, with restrictive clothing creating a higher risk of causing accidents.

However, Graham highlighted that wearing bulky items of clothing behind the wheel can also result in serious fines and a serious risk of motorists being banned from the roads.

He warned: "In extreme cases, if your choice of winter wear leads to a lack of control over the vehicle, you could be charged with driving without due care and attention.

"This comes with a hefty fine of up to £5,000, nine points on your license, and the possibility of a driving ban."

To avoid breaking the law, Graham suggested that drivers looking to stay warm swap their stylish coats for a range of layered clothing items.

He continued: "Consider wearing layers that provide warmth without hindering your movement. Bulky coats and scarves may look stylish, but they can pose serious risks on the road.

"Not only does layering allow you to stay warm in varying weather conditions, but it also allows you to adapt easily to temperature changes inside the car."
