Maybe it was the year long stock shortages or the lack of proper current-gen exclusives, but the latest console generation still feels reasonably fresh.

In reality, the PS5 launched all the way back in 2020, and we're already hearing rumours about the PS6 release date.

Indeed, according to the latest reports, the PlayStation 6 will have a 2027 release date, which means we're only a couple of years away from the next-gen.

And judging by the latest sales reports, Sony can't afford to waste any time with the release of the PlayStation 6.

According to figures posted by VGChartz, PS5 sales for December 2024 were down compared to the same month the previous year.

Sony reportedly sold 1.62 million units in the Americas in December 2024, which is down by nearly 200,000 compared to December 2023. That's a 10.4% decrease.

It's unclear how the sales were split between the original PS5 and the PS5 Pro, which launched back in November.

Sony also launched its 30th Anniversary range of consoles in late 2024, which were snapped up fast.

A big upgrade over the original PS5, the PS5 Pro makes a variety of improvements to visuals and performance.

The PS5 Pro console comes with Sony's excellent DualSense controller, as well as a copy of Astro's Playroom built-in to the device.

While the improvements to visuals and performance are the headline features, it's worth remembering that the PS5 Pro also comes with a 2TB solid-state drive, which is twice the storage of the original PS5 at launch. 

With games like Call of Duty potentially taking up a few hundred gigabytes of storage space, the bigger SSD is arguably worth the price alone. 

Of course, it's the improved specs that really makes the PS5 Pro worth purchasing, especially if you're sick of choosing between graphics and performance.
