Just as parts of the UK recover from havoc wreaked by Storm Eowyn this week, they are set to be hit by another barrage of snow and rain, according to new weather reports.

The worst of the storm hit the country on Friday, with strong winds and warnings of icy conditions expected to remain in place for Scotland and Northern Ireland on Sunday.

While a yellow warning for heavy rain will expire for southern England and most of Wales on Monday morning, northern and southern regions will barely have a few days of rest before yet another unsettled weather pattern begins moving across the country.

Forecasts from WXCharts show snowfall reaching depths of 13cm in north eastern Scotland on Wednesday, January 29, and stretching down into the West Midlands, with flurries accumulating at around 1cm on the north west England coast.

By 6pm on Wednesday, another spell of rain and snow will move from the south across the south western coast, drenching Devon, Cornwall and Dorset and turning into flurries on the Welsh coast and the Midlands around Birmingham.

Overnight, the snow will become more concentrated along a stretch of England from the Norwich coast down to Plymouth in the south, with depths of up to 2cm gathering at around 9pm.

By early on Thursday morning, the stretch of icy January weather will have further set in between the east and south coast, with London and Southampton caught in the crosshairs, both forecast to experience a mix of rain, snow and sleet.

Meanwhile, heavy downfalls will accelerate on the Norwich and Ipswich coastline, with rainfall of around 3mm per hour stretching across the English Channel to Holland.

It will accompany a UK-wide drop in the mercury overnight on Wednesday, with most of the country expected to wake up to sub-zero temperatures, at their lowest of around -8C in north western Scotland, and hovering around 0C and 1C in central and southern regions.

Before the mid-week blast of chilly and white weather, the Met Office has warned of a new low-pressure system set to move in from the south west on Sunday, with so-called Storm Hermina expected to cap the weekend off with more strong winds and heavy rain.

Meteorologist Jonathan Vautrey said the system would “be a notch down compared to Storm Eowyn” but could still see wind gusts of 60 to 70mph hit the south west and Wales before moving up north in the afternoon and evening.

The Met Office’s long-range forecast predicts “cloudy and wet weather” especially in northern regions at the beginning of February, with some heavy rain and strong winds expected to continue.

The first week of next month could see the current unsettled climate and temperatures even out to the seasonal average, however, stoking hopes for a final end to the seemingly non-stop cold and disruptive weather recorded so far this winter.

Today:

A calmer start for most of the UK in the wake of Storm Eowyn’s record-breaking winds, with some rain expected in Scotland and snow gathering in northern areas by this afternoon. Gales forecast to pick up on the southwestern coast by the evening.

Tonight:

Hill snow expected to continue falling northwards in Scotland, while fresh rainfall gathers pace in central and southern England and gale force winds pick up in the south.

Monday:

Thundery rain expected across most of the UK throughout the day, with a likelihood of snow in northern Scotland and strong winds continuing in southern parts of England.

Outlook for Tuesday to Thursday:

Wet and windy conditions pushing through to the mid-week, with temperatures beginning to calm on Thursday, though staying chilly and frosty overnight.
