Duchess Sophie made a rare four-word remark about her son after the death of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Prince Edward and Sophie’s children Lady Louise Windsor, 21, and James Wessex, 17, accompanied their older cousins as they held vigil by the late Queen’s coffin in Westminster Hall in 2022.

While the Duchess of Edinburgh, 60, had initial concerns about her son taking part as a result of his age, she said that it was something he wanted to do.

Thee mum-of-two said in an interview with The Telegraph: “It was incredibly moving.”

She said: "He was really keen to do it. And I think it was really important for him to do it, and obviously for Louise as well.”

The duchess continued: "I was slightly holding my breath, wanting them to feel that they'd done it well more than anything else. I wasn't worried about anything happening; it was more that I wanted them to feel that they'd done their bit for their grandmother.

"It was incredibly moving, and lovely to see her surrounded by them."

Although often seen at big royal events, both of Sophie’s children have a great degree of privacy away from these moments as they do not use HRH titles.

This has given them the freedom to live relatively ordinary lives, with Sophie once saying how her children do the same things that those outside of the Royal Family do.

In a previous interview with The Times, Sophie told interviewer Christina Lamb: “They go to a regular school.

"They go to friends for sleepovers and parties. At weekends we do lots of dog walking and stay with friends.

“I guess not everyone’s grandparents live in a castle, but where you are going is not the important part, or who they are.”

Prince Edward and Duchess Sophie's children are unlikely to become full time working royals when they leave education, with Sophie also revealing how they have been raised in the knowledge they are likely to "have to work for a living".
