POLL: Should Donald Trump deport Prince Harry? | Royal | News

Donald Trump has vowed to take “appropriate action” against Prince Harry if it turns out that the Royal lied on his visa application about drug taking - so today Express.co.uk readers are being asked: should the new US President boot him out of the country?

The Duke of Sussex currently lives in Montecito in California with wife Meghan Markle and children Archie and Lilibet, having relocated across the Atlantic in 2020 after their well-publicised decision to step down as frontline royals

However, his right to keep doing so could become precarious in light of Mr Trump's return thanks to revelations in his controversial memoir, Spare.

Harry’s presence in the US is reportedly based on a spousal visa, which he qualifies for through Meghan, a US citizen - but admissions about drug use, detailed in his 2023 book, may complicate matters.

Immigration laws in the United States can bar entry to individuals who admit to drug use, even without criminal charges or convictions.

Mr Trump could make life difficult for the Sussexes, given past remarks. The 79-year-old once suggested he could have had a romantic relationship with the late Princess Diana, Harry’s mother, and has also called Meghan “nasty”.

Her perceived alignment with the Democratic Party, including her encouragement of voter turnout during the 2020 presidential election, is unlikely to smooth relations either.

While the US President does not directly control immigration cases, the political climate under Trump's leadership could indirectly influence public and institutional attitudes towards high-profile individuals like Harry and Meghan.

While the exact details of Harry’s visa application remain private, his candid disclosures in Spare are now likely to become a focus of scrutiny.

Legal experts have speculated that Harry may have obtained a waiver for his drug use, which is possible under US immigration law but not guaranteed.

If Mr Trump’s administration chooses to prioritise stringent immigration enforcement, Harry’s case could potentially attract attention as a high-profile example.

In the event that Harry’s US residency is challenged, his position in the UK might also be less certain than expected. Having stepped back as a senior member of the Royal Family in 2020, Harry has relinquished many privileges associated with his former role and his relationship with the Royal Family remains strained, particularly following the release of Spare and his Netflix series with Meghan.

Public sentiment in the UK towards the Duke and Duchess of Sussex has also shifted, with some viewing their criticism of royal institutions as disloyal.

If Harry were to return to the UK under such circumstances, he might face difficulties reintegrating into public life and finding a stable role within British society.

The Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, has actively pursued the release of Prince Harry's US visa application records.

In March 2023, they submitted a dossier to various government entities, inquiring about the details of his visa application, and the following month filed a lawsuit against the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS), seeking access to Prince Harry's immigration records.

In September 2024, a Washington DC federal judge ruled against the Foundation's request, stating that the DHS rightfully withheld the records to protect Prince Harry's privacy.

However, the Foundation has continued its efforts by requesting the court to reconsider the decision, arguing that the judge did not follow the proper process for reviewing the case records privately.
