The Met Office has issued rare amber weather warnings as Britain braces for snow this weekend.

The forecaster has issued the danger to life alerts on Friday, with the peak of the snowfall expected to hit on Saturday, January 4 and Sunday, January 5.

Warnings are in place across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, starting from 6pm tomorrow until 11.59pm the following evening. However, yellow warnings for ice have already been put in place as early as 4pm today.

The full list of regions under the amber alert are: East Midlands, East of England, London, South East of England, North West, South West, Wales, Yorkshire and Humber and West Midlands.

The Met Office said: "Snow and freezing rain will likely lead to disruption to transport and some other services." They also warned of "power cuts" and communities being cut off by the extreme weather.
