Hull crash victims, 16 and 18, who died in New Year's Day smash named | UK | News

Two teenagers who died in an horrific head-on crash on New Year's Day have been named for the first time.

William Herbert, 16, from Howden and Olly Mitchell, 18, from Ellerton, East Riding of Yorkshire, died after cars they were travelling in crashed into each other in Staithes Road, Preston.

Humberside Police said a grey Volkswagen Golf and a black Vauxhall Grandland were being driven in opposite directions when the vehicles crashed together at about 1.30am on Wednesday (January 1).

The emergency services rushed to the scene where William was pronounced dead. Olly later died in hospital from his injuries, according to Humberside Police.

Two other passengers were also injured in the smash. A 16-year-old girl remains in a critical but stable condition while a 17-year-old boy is in a serious but stable condition, the police said.

A 62-year-old man, who was a passenger in the Vaxuhall Grandland, was also taken to hospital where he was treated for injuries which the police said are no longer life threatening.

The driver of the Vauxhall, a woman aged 34, suffered a serious injury to her arm. Two other passengers suffered minor injuries, according to Humberside Police.

It said in a statement that the driver of the Volkswagen was arrested on Wednesday (January 1) on suspicion of two counts of causing death by dangerous driving. The 17-year-old boy has been released on bail while enquiries continue.

Humberside Police said the teenagers' families continue to be supported by specialist trained officers and have asked for privacy at this extremely difficult time.

Police are appealing for anyone who was in the area around the time of the crash or people with dashcam footage or anybody that saw the crash to call 101 quoting log 60 of 1 January.
