Mary Berry’s homemade garlic bread is ‘very quick’ to make with just 8 simple ingredients

Garlic bread is one of the most beloved party foods for good reason, but instead of buying one frozen from the supermarket consider making one yourself with this easy recipe.

Homemade garlic bread is one of the tastiest dishes you can bake, and Mary has shared it is incredibly easy to make yourself with just eight ingredients.

Mary said: “Everyone loves to buy dough balls when they’re eating out and this is a quick way to make them at home.

“They’re so versatile too – enjoy them on the side with a pasta dish, or with a topping as a canapé or starter. This recipe makes 20 fairly large-sized balls, but you could easily make 40 smaller ones if you prefer.”

This is the perfect side dish to impress guests on New Year’s Eve or delight your family with if you have loved ones visiting on New Year’s Day.

Method:

To begin, pour the flour, yeast and olive oil into a large mixing bowl. Add one teaspoon of salt to a separate part of the bowl far away from the yeast.

If salt and yeast are combined too early the salt can prevent the yeast from working so be careful when mixing it.

Stir the warm water into the bowls and mix everything together until it begins to form a dough.

Dust a clean work surface with flour, and pour the dough onto the kitchen counter. Knead for five to 10 minutes until it is completely smooth.

Coat a large bowl in oil, add the dough and then cover the dough with cling film and leave to rise.

Place the bowl filled with dough somewhere warm and leave an hour or an hour and 30 minutes until it has doubled in size.

Meanwhile, you can make the garlic butter by placing the butter, crushed garlic and chopped parsley in a small bowl and mixing it together.

Once the time is up and the dough has gotten bigger, pour it back out onto a clean floured work surface.

Knead the dough again and then roll it into 20 even-sized balls. Grease a roasting tin with oil, and arrange the garlic bread dough balls into the tin so they are just touching.

Cover the rin with cling film again, leave in a warm place and leave it to rise again for 30 to 45 minutes.

When you are ready to cook, preheat the oven to 220C (200C fan or Gas Mark 7). Bake the garlic dough balls in the oven for 15 to 18 minutes until they are golden at the top.

Once fully cooked, remove from the oven and spread the garlic butter over the dough bread balls while they are still hot.

Your mouthwatering garlic bread is now ready to serve and is sure to be the star side dish at your event.
