Majorca warning for Brits as resort to install cameras on beach amid 'rising theft' | World | News

A whopping 30 surveillance cameras will be installed in the resort of Alcudia, including at the town's main beach, the local council has announced.

The decision comes in the wake of an increase in the number of thefts reported to Alcudia Police, as stated by the force.

Cameras will be trained on access points along the three-kilometre stretch of Puerto Alcudia beach, reports theMajorca Daily Bulletin.

The CCTVs will be operational in time for the start of next year's tourism season.

Some will also be installed on the main streets, at road intersections and other "strategic points".

The announcement was made by the police councillor Juan Sendín, as he unveiled the first of two so-called "Virtual Violet Points".

Equipped with 24/7 high-definition camera surveillance and direct phone connections to the police, the units are aimed at protecting people at risk, preventing aggression and tackling gender violence.

Alcudia is gaining a reputation for theft, with some tourists complaining about being robbed.

In a post on Tripadvidsor, Michele P wrote: "Nice Beach very big where you can have a nice walk.

"Unfortunately horrible experience - someone stolen my phone, wallet and money after I put them in the safe attached on umbrella with secret code.

"I had taken an umbrella chairs and the safe but someone had the key and he stolen everything.

"Don't bring anything of value with you and be careful, the police told me that they stolen every day, for this reason Alcudia beach is very dangerous."

Another visitor said that his mother had been robbed while staying in the resort.

In a post to his Facebook page, Alex Fiero said: "Yesterday afternoon on Alcudia beach my mom had her small grey cross body bag with contents stolen.

"These included an IPhone, euros of around 350, a symbicourt inhaler, apple headphones, a Post office travel moeny card and room key card for the Grupotel Maritimo."

Majorca is a very popular holiday destination and attracted 12.48 million visitors last year.
